This is English is a 501(C)(3) non-profit adult educational organization. We empower communities of women to thrive, live out their unlimited potential, personal development, and workforce development through English proficiency, soft skills, digital literacy, and micro credentialing. 

Our founder and director Marquita K. Johl launched This is English in January 2023 after teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) for more than 17 years.

Our goal is to provide affordable English acquisition courses to adult English language learners who strive to master English in their personal worlds, academic environments, and professional settings.

We aim to empower our students, providing them with the tools necessary to excel in the classrooms, their careers, and their lives.

Additionally, we focus on ensuring our students have digital and computer skills.

We emphasize personal development as well as workforce development, providing students with job skills.

In lieu of following traditional academic and professional journeys, we aim to focus on skills based learning via micro credentialing.

Last, but certainly not least, we believe wholeheartedly in building a community within our classrooms and learning environments. 

Marquita Johl has been teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) and workforce development for 17 years. She has always been passionate about adult education and she graduated from Saint Joseph’s University with a Master’s of Science in Education, specializing in Instructional Technology. Her undergraduate studies were at the University of Miami in Communication and Creative Writing.

Ms. Johl loves empowering women from all walks of life and building community within learning environments. She specializes in serving immigrants, teaching ESOL pre-beginners/beginners, and training adult learners in digital literacy. 

She also serves as an adjunct professor at local colleges and organizations in Maryland. She has taught all ESOL levels including grammar, pronunciation, speaking, listening, reading, citizenship, civics, pre-GED, academic and professional writing. 

If she has spare time, she loves cooking, baking, photography, and making skin care products.
